Also called "keyhole" surgery or minimal access surgery, laparoscopic surgery of the liver and pancreas is a relatively new advancement in the field of hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. The main advantage of laparoscopic surgery of the liver and pancreas is that it avoids long abdominal incisions. This results in less post-operative pain and earlier discharge from the hospital. The extent of surgery remains the same as in open procedures. Most liver resections can be performed laparoscopically these days. Laparoscopic surgery of liver and pancreas requires prolonged training and is available only at few centers in India, including ours.
